Born in San Francisco, California, based in Columbia, South Carolina, Cedric Umoja is a multidisciplinary artist who seeks to enact alchemical change. Through the use of letter forms and archetypal totems, Umoja bridges ancient and future in his drawings, paintings, murals and installation work. His influences include Dondi White, Sam Kieth, Max Beckmann, Amedeo Modigliani, Rammellezee,Sun Ra, Jack Whitten and Hans Hoffman. Having apprenticed under Yale MFA and veteran fine artist, Tony Cacalano, Umoja gained the gift of Cacalano’s own tutelage under Jack Tworkov, one of the founders of the famed New York School. This lineage can be glimpsed in Umoja’s use of bright color and modern composition. In addition, Umoja’s work features elements of Graffiti, comic sequential art, Japanese manga, Modern, African and American art.
