One of my favorite things about art is that it’s about so much more than that one individual painting. If we step back and take a bird’s eye view of a body of work…what we are actually getting is a peek into a whole world that the artist has created. It’s not hard to imagine Claude Monet, long beard and overcoat, wandering through the gardens he painted and it’s not hard for me to imagine Tyler Wolf, black t-shirt and jean jacket, armed with a bass guitar shredding out some tunes with these characters he has created. Talk about a supergroup! Then, Monet tears off his jacket to reveal a Van Halen t-shirt and studded leather wristband. The crowd goes wild!

I get carried away. Art does that. Artists create mythologies. We are invited in to engage with those mythologies, those stories. We even get to take them a step further and mix in our own interpretations. We bring our experiences to the work.

I see the works of Tyler Wolf and I’m transported to my happy place. That place where creation happens up on stage among band members. At a live show there’s that moment of quiet in between songs when there’s just a crackle and hum from the amps…maybe the bartender throws away a beer bottle.

Anticipation as the crowd slowly pulses.

The drummer’s sticks smash together…1..2..3..4!!!

ROCK ’N’ ROLL!!!

Off to the races! The crowd bounces up and down.

Ohhhh that sweet sweet purity of energy. Man, I love it!

For me…that’s Tyler Wolf. He’s captured that energy and channeled it through a paint brush. He’s a creator of Interstellar gods of pure rock ‘n’ roll energy. I’ve seen him paint. There’s thunder and lightning involved. It’s a wonderous thing.
